Welcome to the European Region of WUPJ

The European Region of the World Union for Progressive Judaism works to promote the development of Progressive Judaism in Central, Western Europe and Israel, to encourage and facilitate the formation of Progressive Jewish communities; and to stimulate and encourage the study of Judaism and a recognition of its place in modern life.

The European Region faces challenges: the need for personnel to liaise between communities to ensure that we share information about the support available, by way of educational materials and resources, and the passing on of experience and general know-how.

There are progressive communities in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Vienna Conference - unparalleled success

The European Region Conference which took place in Vienna from 13-16 March was an unparalleled success in the history of European Region Conferences, hosted by local Progressive Community Or Chadasch whose members wholeheartedly participated in the Conference and were actively involved in the planning and carrying out of much of the programme.

The Conference was held during the 70th Anniversary of the Anschluss and to be holding such a conference in which around 250 Jews from 16 countries from around the World took part, was especially moving.

For the first time ever in Vienna, two Progressive Shabbat Services took place.  The first for around 200 people was held at the Conference Hotel, the magnificant Imperial Riding School Vienna - a Renaissance Hotel.  The second, for a meeting of eurojews - Progressive Jewish young adults - was held at the Or Chadasch Synagogue in Robertgasse.

Several wonderful and thought provoking addresses were given, notably the Keynote lecture from Rabbi Michael Marmur, an update on WUPJ International Developments by Rabbi Joel Oseran, and the Shabbat Sermon given by Or Chadasch's Rabbi Walter Rothschild.

Study sessions, 15 workshops, a magnificent exhibition celebrating the 100th anniversary of the history of the Union Liberale Israelite de France, and a showing of the film "The Darien Dilemma" added to the choices available to delegates.  All in all this was a most memorable and unique Conference.
